Interschool sport (Gala Days) Term 1 & 4

Students in Years 4-6 participate in interschool sport in summer and winter each year. A variety of sports are offered to our students. Three different sports are chosen for each summer and winter gala days and students will be asked to indicate which sport they would like to do in preference order. Teams are then selected by school staff and usually will have junior and senior teams depending on the sport. The school provides transport to and from the events. Parents are welcome to attend to support the students.

Coaching for these sports is provided where possible by parents. Parents can also help by bringing water and fruit to the games.  If you are able to provide support for Gala Days by coaching or helping on the day, please let the office know.

Sporting Houses

Interhouse sporting events at Wooloowin are spread out across the year and include a cross country event, an athletics day and a swimming carnival. A house champion is awarded for each sports day.

History

Throughout the school’s history, sporting houses have seen significant changes. Initially the house names were Bevington, Robertson and McMinn after the school’s first headmasters, with a fourth house, McKenna, added a decade later. By the 1950s the school went back to having three houses and changed the names to Oxley, Cunningham and Flinders after early explorers. The houses slowly fell into disuse and in 1979 the Year 7 students created the houses as we know them today: Bunderra, Tarmaroo and Kunara.

Tarmaroo: Possum

Colour: Red
War cry:
Tarmaroo, Tarmaroo

We're the best

Come on now let's beat the rest!

Race like the lightning,

Leap to the sky

Tarmaroo, Tarmaroo

T-A-R-M-A-R-O-O!

Kunara: Tiger Shark

Colour: Green
War cry:
Mighty Kunara,

Running like an emu

Jumping like a kangaroo

Ra, Ra, Ra

We are the tiger sharks,

Eating up the enemies,

The possums and the wallabies

Ha, Ha, Ha mighty Kunara

Clever Kunara

K-U-N-A-R-A!

Bunderra: Black Wallaby

Colour: Yellow
War cry:
Bunderra, Bunderra

That's our cry

Wallabies, wallabies try, try, try

With a left, left, left

and a right, right, right

Come on wallabies fight, fight, fight

B-U-N-D-E-R-R-A

Bunderra!
